The area around Voorst is shaped by the dynamics/vitality of the river landscape. The IJssel River often changed its course within the broad drainage basin. Over decades the IJssel carried along the sand and deposed it on the river dunes; the higher grounds on which Voorst is located. In the lower parts the IJssel formed a deposit from the river clay: Voorster clay. The border between both foundations in the landscape is clearly visible. It coincides exactly with the border between, in the northern part the forest of De Poll Estate and the Nijenbeker Klei and in the southern part the housing of the village Voorst and the agriculture area of Voorsterklei. The abrupt height difference at the Voorster church illustrates the transition in the most beautiful way. Within the clay river area in direction north-south, you can still recognize various traces, a clear representation of the influence of the IJssel. One of the latest river tranches of the IJssel is the Oude IJssell/Hoendernesterbeek, the southern border of the Voorsterklei.
