LifeCycle is an ambitious proposal for a 20,000m2 residential and commercial project on Plot 1C in Amsterdam’s Sluisbuurt neighborhood. It was designed by the team consisting of HOH architects, HPP architects, IMd consulting engineers and New Horizon, commissioned by Moringa GmbH, Landmarken AG.
The plan consisting of low-rise buildings and a tower is designed as a social and sustainable ecosystem. By making co-living and co-working an integral part of the building concept, there is room for everyone in every age group or family composition.
The building connects the park and the city street. The gradual transition between a private balcony, collective outdoor spaces and the park provides social bonding for the apartments’ main target group: families. At the same time, the terraces, with large plantings, allow plants and animals to find their way up.
Limiting energy needs and sustainably generated energy are important principles that find their place in the facade. The residential tower has an additional façade layer that creates space for, among other things, balconies, planters, shelter and nesting facilities, PV panels and water reservoirs that provide water for the plants in periods of drought.Using a parametric model, the placement of the PV panels was optimized. In addition, the envelope also provides shade in the summer months, minimizing the need to cool the apartments. The building has a particularly low energy requirement and is virtually zero energy.
