The environment Eurojust is designed so that the landscape and architecture blend completely. This is the only way heavy security cannot dominate.
DS, in the team of Mecanoo Architects and engineering firm RHDHV, designed the new building for the headquarters of Eurojust, commissioned by the Government Buildings Agency. The office is located next to the World Forum in The Hague’s international zone. This area is extremely well guarded, but it doesn’t look that way. Eurojust and its surroundings are the continuation of the World Forum.
Design
The design is consistent with the concept for the design of the World Forum (see World Forum project), this public space is themed “peace and justice.” Despite the tight security, the space looks relaxed. The project is a fine example of the interplay between landscape and architecture characteristic of this project.
Again, a dune atmosphere was created by the soft undulations and planting choices combined with the granite paving and the same granite furniture. Biodiversity has increased through native and, in this case, exotic plant choices. The planting plan is by Fred Booy.
Details
From the entrance area, the eye-catcher is the water wall. This is a wall of plants over which water falls down in small streams. This feat in construction will eventually become a completely overgrown “rock wall.”
