In close consultation with the project manager Jos Engels of Kennemerwonen and the architect Mark van Rooij of BRT architects, a special housing complex has been designed. With its 48 social rental apartments, it blends well into the landscape and spares many existing natural qualities.
The architecture was to match the chalet style of the surrounding pavilions by the architect F.W.M. Poggenbeek, from the time of the asylum ‘Duin en Bosch’.
The buildings are in relief, and are lined by native dune vegetation. It provides space for a path that leads hikers through the dunes. It has nest boxes for solitary tits and a colony of house sparrows. Swifts can also settle there. \Accommodations for bats are also integrated into the eaves. On the south and east facades, holes have been drilled in the bricks for wild bees.
A setup with two beeches was chosen, with the obligatory parking program in between. For the walkers, this way the cars are nicely out of sight. The neglected amphitheater has been restored with edges of used 30×30 concrete tiles laid down in nets.
