The wastewater treatment plant is a beautiful natural area full of biodiversity, located in the heart of the Western harbor area.
Objective
The wastewater treatment plant in Amsterdam West is a project by Waternet. The architect is studio HH, Laurens Jan Ten Kate. The WWTP is located in the western harbor area. There is almost no activity on the site, making it a sanctuary for flora and fauna.
Design
The site is designed as a stepping stone between the coast and the city. The soil is covered with limestone stones in various sizes. Ponds have been created in several areas. Sea buckthorn and pine trees complete the landscape. The management is tailored to the natural opportunities and the role of the site as a refuge for small animals.
Detail
The fence around the site is not located on the property boundary but behind the planting, with the narrow section between the tanks. The municipality has planted pine trees in the verge of the Australieweg. This makes the site appear as a larger landscape than it actually is.
