Polder Rijnenburg – Design Studios ‘Archaeology First’

-

Polder Rijnenburg is once again the subject of development. In 2007, we conducted a landscape cultural-historical analysis commissioned by the Municipality of Utrecht, Cultural History Section. The aim of the section was to ensure that the planned housing development would take greater account of the long history of this location. Beneath the grass lies a treasure trove of information and stories waiting to be uncovered!

In the meantime, we have held two design workshops with developers, civil servants, and designers on the development of the area, where heritage plays a central role early in the design process. This idea, along with securing funding from Minister Hugo de Jonge, originated from Erik Graafstal, the passionate commissioner from Archaeology and Monuments. The workshops were led by Maike van Stiphout. Check out the results on the AORTA website.

Parallel to this process, Fred Booy has innovatively created a planting toolkit for the developments in Polder Rijnenburg, also commissioned by Erik Graafstal. The toolkit was developed with expert input from Margareth Hop (Actifolia) regarding the root depths of various plant species. This document will help guide planting choices during the development. A link to the document, which will be available mid-August, has been provided on the AORTA website.

Triptych to the Natural History Museum Rotterdam

The triptych “What are we waiting for” has been loaned to the municipality of Rotterdam. We’re thrilled about this, as the Core Biotope Map by H+N+S and the municipality of Rotterdam, as well as the projects Rotta Nova, Hofbogen Park, and Tidal Park Keilehaven, are current and must be seen now. Ingeborg Berger and Sander Klaassen agreed. The first destination of the triptych is the Natural History Museum in Rotterdam, where it is displayed in the exhibition Rotterdam National Park. From the end of October, it will be accompanied by a text panel and an explanatory video.

IARB 2024 – What are we waiting for?

What are we waiting for? It is time that we, designers of the human biotopes, serve in the interest of all living creatures. The next step in civilisation is to regenerate life on earth. Therefore, we should invent new design theories, starting with educating for a nature inclusive design approach. Simultaneously, we should work on aesthetics that make urban wilding desirable and feasible. If we do succeed, they will ask: how did they do it? They achieved this just in time, strategically, and with the power of beauty.
