The bicycle parking facility behind Amsterdam Central Station has won the 2024 BNA Award in the Livability and Social Cohesion category. The new IJ-Boulevard bicycle parking serves as a plug-in to the mobility hub of Amsterdam Central. The parking facility, with space for 4,000 bicycles, is located on the IJ-side of the station. It is semi-floating beneath the water’s surface, meticulously integrated between the quay, the car tunnel, and above the North/South metro line.
The design of the bicycle parking facility is by VenhoevenCS, while the concept for the stunning public space was created by Ton Schaap and Simon Sprietsma from the Municipality of Amsterdam. The contractor is Van Hattum & Blankevoort. DS contributed to the underwater world with various invisible enhancements. The concept design of the plaza was developed by the Municipality of Amsterdam, and the detailing and execution supervision of the plaza was carried out under the guidance of DS.
